Pamela Howard is Professor Emeritus at the University of the Arts London and a practicing Director and Scenographer especially in contemporary Opera and Music Theatre. In 2008 she was awarded the OBE for Services to Drama. As Stage Designer she realised over 200 productions in the UK, Europe and USA, and in 1991 at the Tramway Glasgow began a series of site-specific works with the late John McGrath. From then, she has been exploring the relationship between architecture and performance, making work in large and small spaces and re-assessing how theatre spaces are used.
In 2005 she directed and designed the Greek premiere of The Greek Passion (Bohuslav Martinů/Nikos Kazantsakis) for the Opera of Thessaloniki, staged in the ancient Byzantine citadel and former town prison the Eptapyrgion. In 2006 as Artist in Residence at Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh USA Three Fragments from The Marriage, and installation and performance piece was staged at the Miller Gallery of Contemporary Art, serving as the template for the later full production.
In 2009 as Project Designer with Nicholas Kent Director Tricycle Theatre, Kilburn London, created The Great Game - 12 newly commissioned plays about Afghanistan. As Director/Scenographer for the National Theatre Janaček Opera 1st professional production in English of The Marriage comic chamber opera by Bohuslav Martinu/Nikolai Gogol performed in the historic MozartSal of the Reduta Theatre Brno.
