La Celestina

(Fernando de Rojas : 1492)

A new adaptation by Robert Potter and Pamela Howard
created with scenographer Georgy Alexi-Meschkishvili
Hopkins Center for the Arts : Hanover : New Hampshire USA March 2002

The scenography for "La Celestina" is part of a series of productions which explore the possibilities of re-using the theatre space itself, rather than building expensive scenery. It is site specific to the theatre, and starts from considering the spectator's experience from the moment of arrival to the theatre building.

The audience enter the auditorium, a 900 seater, and to their surprise they see that all the seats are covered by dyed blue sheets that make it look like a large sea with waves. There are small white paper boats floating on the sheets. Strange sea like acoustic music and light. They walk up the central aisle, through the proscenium doors at either side of the stage and behind the fire curtain they discover another world. The stage (58" wide) has been converted into a traverse auditorium. Above, the silver planets in the celestial sky gently move. They are made out of old spoons and forks, and below the traverse stage is the world of the dead.
